01
The verdict, in one number
Weather, water temperature, flow stability, moon phase, and hatch activity are weighed into a single 1 to 10 score. Green means go.
02
When to actually be on the water
A timeline marks the peak and secondary windows for the day, so you can plan around work instead of guessing at dawn.
03
What to tie on first
Fly picks ranked by confidence, matched to the hatches and water temperature the river is reporting right now.

What's under the hood
Real gauges. Real weather. No vibes.
The score is only as good as its inputs, so we use the same sources a guide would check, pulled together every hour.
USGS Water Services
Streamflow (CFS) and water temperature pulled from the gauge on your river, not a regional average.
Open-Meteo hourly weather
Air temperature, pressure trend, wind, cloud cover, and precipitation, hour by hour for the next 10 days.
River-specific hatch calendars
Emergence windows, water-temperature triggers, and spawning periods keyed to each river and its trout species.
“Checked the forecast before my trip to the Pere Marquette. The fly pick was spot on. Landed my biggest brown of the year.”

Questions
Before you tie on.
Is TroutFishing really free?
Yes. You can open the app and check today’s forecast for your rivers without creating an account or entering a card.
How is the fishing score calculated?
Each day gets a 1 to 10 score built from live USGS flow and water temperature, hourly weather, barometric trend, solunar periods, and the hatch and spawning calendar for that river. The score is recomputed hourly as conditions change.
Which rivers are covered?
More than 100 trout rivers across 30 US states, from Western tailwaters like the South Fork Snake to Eastern freestones like Penns Creek and the Beaverkill. Browse by state below to see what is near you.
Do I need to install an app?
No. TroutFishing runs in your phone or desktop browser. If you want it on your home screen, your browser will offer to add it, and it works offline for the rivers you have already loaded.
How accurate are the fly recommendations?
Fly picks are matched to the hatches expected at the current water temperature and time of year on your river, then ranked by confidence. They are a strong starting point, not a guarantee. Logging your catches in the app helps tune them over time.
Where does the water data come from?
Flow and temperature come straight from USGS gauges. Where a river has no gauge, water temperature is estimated from air temperature and season and flagged as an estimate.
